Around 3 a.m. April 8, 2018, Deputy Brian Hensley responded to a two vehicle wreck on southbound I-75 around the 13 mile point.
A Nissan Xterra SUV struck the rear of a Ford Ranger truck. During his investigation, Dep. Hensley noticed the smell of alcoholic beverage coming from the SUV and the driver, Abel Niere, 28, of Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Niere could not complete field sobriety tests, and witnesses reported that he attempted to leave the scene but his vehicle disabled due to the damage.
The three occupants of the truck did not suffer any obvious injuries.
While Dep. Hensley continued his invention, Williamsburg Police Officer Cody Jeffries took Niere into custody. He was charged with DUI and driving on a DUI suspended license. Niere was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center. Williamsburg Officer David Rowe assisted.
